• PHOTOS MUST BE UNIQUELY IDENTIFIABLE AS DENNIS, MASSACHUSETTS
  i.e. Scargo Tower, Seaview Park, etc. — no birds in flight or bunnies in gardens.
• No previous submissions
• Each person limited to three (3) entries.
• Black & White or Color photos accepted.
• Each photograph (excluding the mat frame board) must have one dimension of at least 8″ (6×9, 8×10, etc.) not to exceed 11″ x 14″ mat.
• All prints should be mounted with a mat board surround and NOT framed in glass.
• Only photos taken after January 1, 2010 are eligible.
• Photos will be judged on composition, general appeal, and technical merit.
• No late entries will be accepted. No exceptions.
• Limit of one prize per contestant.

Dennis Arts and Culture Council

Another productive year for DACC brought programs and performances to the town and students of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School System. We distributed over $4000 from both the MA Cultural Council and funds we raised through a Fall for the Arts Art Raffle. We are working hard at building relationships with local businesses and acquiring funding in addition to the MCC grant.

The fourth Fall for the Arts festival in October saw DACC sponsor a concert of the local band Tripping Lilly at the Dennis Union Church. The concert was enjoyed by a sold out audience of all ages. Thanks to member Pat Chase and her team.

DACC hosted another photography contest, with $50 prizes awarded in the youth and adult categories. The event was held at the Dennisport Public Library on Hall Street in Dennisport, with the reception catered by donation from Buckie’s in Dennisport. In 2012 the annual photographic contest will be held in May at the Dennisport Public Library.

A PASS grant allowed Dennis-Yarmouth students to attend the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, with additional Big Yellow Bus funds going toward transportation. We encourage local teachers to further explore these funding options.

To further engage town of Dennis residents we have a newly updated website at www.dennisculture.wordpress.com and have also expanded our presence on facebook as Dennis Arts and Culture Council. Council member Robert Foster maintains both sites with input from council members and the general public.

This upcoming year we will be working on getting Cultural Districts in Dennis with the help of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, our selectman Heidi Schadt, and many of the Dennis Businesses located in the Cultural Districts.

Improvement societies were prevalent in Cape Cod villages during the turn of the century; there was no town public works department. Volunteers swept the streets, planted trees and decorated Veteran’s graves.

The Village Improvement Society of Dennis was chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on October 10, 1902. The charter hangs in the Dennis Memorial Library and states: the object of the Society is to improve and ornament the streets and public grounds of the Village of Dennis by planting and cultivating trees and performing such other acts as shall tend to beautify the village.

Jennifer Stratton here. I received approval for grant money from the Dennis Arts and Culture Council to do an expressive arts program for seniors at the Dennis COA (Council on Aging) Senior Center.

There will be three times I will do a 1 1/2 hour program. The first one is, Monday, April 11, 2011 at The Dennis COA, from 10:30 – 12. The next one will be Monday, May 16, 2011 and then one in June (date to be determined). If you want to attend any of these then please contact the Dennis Senior Center.

• Open to all people ages 13-19 living on Cape Cod or the islands. Teens who are not in school are welcome to participate.
• Send your name, age, address, email, school, and phone#, to Lauren Wolk at lwolkculturalccc@verizon.net. Walk-ins included as time permits.
• No foul language. No abusive language. No props, no music, no costumes.
• Each poem must be performed within three minutes
• Poems should be performed, not read, but you may bring your poems on paper in case you need a prompt.
• The slam will consist of two rounds, with all poets participating in both rounds.

PREPARE TWO POEMS

Scores will be determined by an average of the two rounds.

“But will more adventurous programming help? Should groups make arts experiences more social? Would daily Facebook posts bring in bigger audiences? Is “over the bridge” a largely untapped market? And is it possible to gain more arts patrons when both families and arts organizations are cutting budgets to the bone?”

The gathering was for the Fourth Annual Creative Collaborative Conference sponsored by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.

One interesting note from the article for residents of Dennis:

“Parents have to “get excited” about art, [Daniel Springer] said, noting a student show at Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis brought in all ages, including a Dennis resident who had never been there but went with family to see his granddaughter’s drawing.”

Join the celebration at the Dennis Memorial Library!  June 3, 7-8 pm. Food by Chapins Restaurant and wine by Dennis Public Market.   Dennis residents/homeowners may enter the Third Annual Photography Contest.  Entry forms will be available soon. Photos are due on  May 25, 26 or 27 at the Town Offices, and the opening reception at the Dennis Memorial Library will be held on June 3.  There are two categories: Youth through age 17, and adult (18+). First Prize in the youth category is $50.00, second prize $25.00, and there will be two honorable mentions.  For the adults the first prize is $100.00, second prize is $50.00, and there will be two honorable mentions. Entries must be UNframed and matted, one dimension of at leat eight inches, black and white or color.  There will be three judges.  Join in the fun and start snapping!

Bayonnet Practice

I hope you were able to see the Confederate and Union camps set up by the Dennis Union Church this weekend. The encampment was part of “Dennis Reads” Lincoln Anniversary and was funded in part by DACC. The reenacters were fabulous and the cannon fire transported me to the Civil War days. Thanks to Village Improvement Society and the Dennis Libraries for bringing this even to town.

The Competition is open to full-length plays written by both new and experienced playwrights who live on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. One play will be selected by the judges and presented as a staged reading in June 2009 on the historic Gertrude Lawrence stage as part of Eventide Arts’ 2008-2009 season of plays, concerts and workshops. The winning Competition entry will be awarded the $1,000 Kaplan Prize. Additional support provided by the Marion Jordon Charitable Foundation.

Completed plays and works-in-progress must first be submitted to the Competition by the October 30 deadline to be included in the Competition. The second and final deadline for submission of edited plays is February 28, 2009.
