2011 Annual Report – text for the page on the DACC

Dennis Town Seal

Dennis Arts and Culture Council

Another productive year for DACC brought programs and performances to the town and students of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School System. We distributed over $4000 from both the MA Cultural Council and funds we raised through a Fall for the Arts Art Raffle. We are working hard at building relationships with local businesses and acquiring funding in addition to the MCC grant.

The fourth Fall for the Arts festival in October saw DACC sponsor a concert of the local band Tripping Lilly at the Dennis Union Church. The concert was enjoyed by a sold out audience of all ages. Thanks to member Pat Chase and her team.

DACC hosted another photography contest, with $50 prizes awarded in the youth and adult categories. The event was held at the Dennisport Public Library on Hall Street in Dennisport, with the reception catered by donation from Buckie’s in Dennisport. In 2012 the annual photographic contest will be held in May at the Dennisport Public Library.

A PASS grant allowed Dennis-Yarmouth students to attend the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, with additional Big Yellow Bus funds going toward transportation. We encourage local teachers to further explore these funding options.

To further engage town of Dennis residents we have a newly updated website at www.dennisculture.wordpress.com and have also expanded our presence on facebook as Dennis Arts and Culture Council. Council member Robert Foster maintains both sites with input from council members and the general public.

This upcoming year we will be working on getting Cultural Districts in Dennis with the help of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, our selectman Heidi Schadt, and many of the Dennis Businesses located in the Cultural Districts.

Respectfully submitted,

The Village Improvement Society of Dennis

The Village Improvement Society of Dennis

Many of the Fall for the Arts Cape Cod events take place in the original Dennis village area of the Town of Dennis. One organization that provides beautification of the area is the Village Improvement Society of Dennis (VIS). The VIS also provides a summer concert series. Following is some background information from their website…

Improvement societies were prevalent in Cape Cod villages during the turn of the century; there was no town public works department. Volunteers swept the streets, planted trees and decorated Veteran’s graves.

The Village Improvement Society of Dennis was chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on October 10, 1902. The charter hangs in the Dennis Memorial Library and states: the object of the Society is to improve and ornament the streets and public grounds of the Village of Dennis by planting and cultivating trees and performing such other acts as shall tend to beautify the village.

Stop by their web site to find out more about the Village Improvement Society programs, properties, officers, and volunteer opportunities.

Help Support Amendment 417

The email below went out to interested parties from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). Continued support for the Arts in Dennis are dependent partly upon the MCC.

Dear Colleagues,

Please call your Representative this week and urge him/her to support Amendment 417 and stop the cuts to arts and cultural funding through the MCC.

Last week, Rep. Sarah Peake of Provincetown, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development, filed Amendment 417 to hold cultural funding at this year’s level of $9.1 million. The amendment would reverse a proposed $1.6 million cut to MCC’s budget contained in the House Ways & Means Committee’s version of the state budget for fiscal year 2012.

Contact your Representative before the full House debates begins on April 25.

For the latest MCC budget news, please visit our Advocacy Action Center.

Thank you for your advocacy. It makes an extraordinary statement about the value of our collective work.

Sincerely,

Anita Walker

Executive Director

Massachusetts Cultural Council
